Gameslate Chat connection help (updated Dec 13/03)
Here are some tips for getting connected to Gameslate's chat. If none of these work, try posting on the forums for help or contact Rog.
Problem: The window opens up blank, won't open or an error like .."swf not found" is returned.
Do you have the Flash player/plugin installed and working correctly in your browser? If not, you can install it from Macromedia.
It also helps if you have plugins and JavaScript enabled in your browser.
Problem: The Flash window opens up but it says disconnected and/or a red square appears near the top right corner.
The red square means that the client either failed to connect to the server or was disconnected. You can just click on the red square to try to reconnect. If the problem persists, here are some tips to get connected:
- Make sure you have the current version of the chat app. Your browser might cache an old version and emptying your cache may force it to get the latest version when you open the chat again. The current version is v0.19beta (listed in chat near the Gameslate logo at the top).
- Do you have a firewall, proxy, router or home gateway that is blocking your access to the chat? Gameslate Chat uses port 7188 to connect to the chat server, that's different from the usual web port 80 which browsers use to connect to most websites. Make sure to set your firewall/whatever to allow port 7188 through, otherwise you will not be able to connect to the chat.
- Is your Internet connection working? This may seem overly simple, but suprisingly often it's the case for connectivity problems. Check to see that you can reach other websites, etc.
- It's also possible that there is a problem somewhere on the Internet between the server and your computer. Often websites will work with a large amount of packetloss, but other services are more sensitive. If the Gameslate website seems slow to you, this may be the case. Try again a little later.
Problem: The Flash window opens up and says that it's connecting but the green block just keeps rotating.
If that green connecting block rotates for more than 30 seconds, something went wrong. Try closing the window and opening it again. If that doesn't help, check your Internet & firewall settings, etc. as mentioned above in the previous problem.
Problem: Disconnected with a warning that says you're not "authenticated".
Gameslate chat borrows your browser's login session to determine who you are, so you must be logged in to Gameslate correctly with your browser's cookies turned on (see your browser settings for details).
If for some reason you have software that disallows Gameslate's chat window the information from your browser, you won't be able to connect and authenticate properly. We do not have any other method set up for logging into the chat.
